Moving your SSL Certificate to a new host

 

It is possible to move your certificate if you move hosts as long as they have a similar setup, please note this is not guaranteed to work every time due to the different server setups used by different Hosting companies. In some cases the only way to get SSL at your new host is to start over and order a new one.

 

This can only be done in WHM.

In all cases when we say domain.com this is the domain that the certificate is for, if you registered it for www.domain.com then use that.

 

What will you need

To make the move you will need the information about your current certificate this can be retrieved from WHM or if you have your original emails when you generated the CSR and your certificate you are ready to go.

 

Option 1 - retrieve Data from WHM

• Find the SSL/TLS section in WHM
• Click "ssl manager" in WHM
• Click the disk icon for domain.com.crt (where domain.com is the domain you want to copy)
• Copy that cert to notepad and save the file (this is the .crt information)
• Click the disk icon for domain.com.key (where domain.com is the domain you want to copy)
• Copy that information to notepad and save the file (this is the .key information)

Option 2 - Information from original emails

• Find the email sent to you from Rapidssl.com when you ordered your certificate
• Copy out the certificate information, make sure you copy the whole thing from -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- to -----END CERTIFICATE----- (we also save this information for you so you can retrive it from the certificate details.
• Copy that cert to notepad and save the file (this is the .crt information)
• Find the second email that was sent to you when you originally generated the CSR for your order (Told you it was important)
• Copy out the RSA Key information, make sure you copy the whole thing from -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY----- to -----END RSA PRIVATE KEY-----
• Copy that info to notepad and save the file (this is the .key information)

Got all the information then you can install it on the new server using the process below

 

 

WHM (Web Hosting Manager)

WebHost Manager is the control center of the CPanel / WebHost Manager package. It is used to set up and manage accounts. Use WHM to install your issued certificate.

You need both the certificate and key files to install the certificate.

To install an SSL certificate:

1. Click on the "Install an SSL Certificate and Setup the Domain link" in the SSL/TLS menu.
2. Paste the information from the .crt file in the top box (The .crt file starts with
   -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----)
3. Enter the domain that the certificate is issued for, the user name for the users account, and Dedicated IP address assigned for the certificate in the Domain, User, and IP Address fields.
4. Paste the information from the .key file in the second box (The .key file starts with
   -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----)
5. Check to make sure that the IP address and domain name and username is all correct then
6. Click on the button to install the certificate.
7. The last section for the "ca bundle" is not required as this is a single certificate install.
